Questions artists ask
Interested in Selling Your Work at Rootstock?
We're always excited to discover new artists and makers! Rootstock is more than a place to sell your work. It's a community of creatives who believe in making things with intention, supporting one another, and connecting people with the stories behind what they buy.
What kinds of artists and makers does Rootstock work with?
Rootstock features a thoughtfully curated mix of art, jewelry, ceramics, photography, home goods, and other handmade creations.
We're drawn to original work with personality, quality craftsmanship, and a story behind it. We especially love supporting local and independent artists.
What makes an artist a good fit for Rootstock?
Beyond beautiful work, we value authenticity, creativity, quality, and community.
We're looking for artists who care about what they make, take pride in their craft, and appreciate being part of something bigger than their individual business.
You don't need a huge following or a perfectly polished brand. We care much more about the work, the person, and the story behind it.
Do I need to be an established artist to apply?
Not at all! We believe everyone starts somewhere. Rootstock was built around the idea of giving artists opportunities to grow, whether they're just beginning to sell their work or have been creating for years.
Can I bring my artwork into the shop for someone to look at?
We ask that all interested artists begin by submitting our online Artist Application Form rather than bringing work into the store.
This allows us to give every submission thoughtful consideration without interrupting the experience of our customers or the day-to-day responsibilities of our staff.
Does Rootstock purchase artwork wholesale or sell on consignment?
We work with artists through arrangements that depend on the type of work and the needs of the collection.
Specific details, including pricing, payment terms, and expectations, are discussed with artists before moving forward.
How long does it take to hear back after applying?
We review artist submissions as opportunities become available. Because we're a small team, we may not be able to respond individually to every application.
We encourage you to keep creating and growing your work in the meantime!
Can I teach a workshop or host an event at Rootstock?
We're always interested in creative ways to bring people together! If you have an idea for a workshop, demonstration, or collaborative event, we'd love to hear about it.
Please share your idea through our artist inquiry process.
Does Rootstock accept every artist who applies?
We wish we had room for everyone! Our space is limited, and we carefully consider how new work fits alongside our existing collection.
Not being selected doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of your work. Sometimes it's simply a matter of timing, available space, or having similar pieces already in the shop.
Does Rootstock offer pop-up markets or other opportunities for artists?
Yes! In addition to our permanent collection, we love creating opportunities for artists through special events, pop-ups, exhibitions, and creative gatherings.
These events are a great way to connect with the community, introduce your work to new people, and grow your creative business.
Does Rootstock promote the artists it carries?
Absolutely! One of our favorite parts of Rootstock is introducing people to the artists behind the work.
Through conversations in the shop, social media, artist features, and special events, we help customers connect with the people and creative processes behind the pieces they love.
